We don't need a pair of scales to tell us that the economy is looking pretty anorexic! Daily we get conflicting reports about which direction in which it is heading. While lawmakers dash to get their quick fix to the finish line the average person is shovel-fed the bad news. The results? It has impacted our spending, our savings, our jobs, our families, our homes, and the list goes on. Oddly enough one thing that gets left out of this equation so many times is our weight. Our "weight"? What on EARTH does our weight have to do with the economy?

Sometimes we spend so much time rehashing the past or preparing for the future that we forget to savor the present moment. That is one of the truths established in H.G. Wells “The Time Machine”. The concept in that book was trying to change a past event by a professor inventing a time machine and then going back in time before the event took place. When that did not work, the professor looked to the distant future to solve the dilemma. But the moral of the story remained the same: life goes on and what is important is NOW!

In all likelihood, there is not a more controversial subject to fly around weight loss or diet discussion forum than the subject of Artificial Sweeteners! Most often the question comes up, “What is ’such and such’, will it stall me and is it safe?” Of course if we turn to the media, including many web sites, it can be very misleading. The word “diet” is often associated with artificial sweeteners. For example Coke and Pepsi have for years used it as part of the name of their product when coupled with artificial sweeteners instead of sugar or high fructose corn syrup. This would lead some to believe that these items are “safe” when used as part of their diet. Some even encourage it! However, when it comes down to the brass tacks, the decision to use any type or artificial sweetener is an individual one, because quite frankly the effects of using them will be as different and individual as we all are.

It will never cease to amaze me how often we discover new ways in which something that is “man-made” can be harmful to us. Take plastics for instance.
