Support Groups

Support Groups

It seems that there are support groups everywhere these days. You can find support for your addictions, if your disabled, if you’re a caregiver, if you have a certain disease, and you can even find support in helping you maintain your weight.  How important is that support?

There have been many studies done that prove that support in any context will help you achieve and maintain your goals, even in helping you maintain your weight. Several studies have been noted in JAMA, but one in particular has intrigued me because it specifically mentions how an internet based support system is beneficial for weight control.

Support is very beneficial in not only taking off the weight, but in helping you maintain it. The trick is to use that support. Once a person reaches a so called goal, they feel the support is no longer needed and then they disappear, thinking they have it all under control, but sadly, this is when support is needed the most. Keeping you at your goal is more important that getting you to that goal. I have always said the protocol is easy, it’s maintenance that is the hard part. Support makes it easy.

I have a friend that is a GREAT example of how support works for life. Back in the late 70′s his friends had to do an intervention, and 30+ years later he is still sober. How? To this day, no matter where he is, no matter what is going on in his life, he still goes to his meetings at least once a week. He still has a sponsor that he calls when things are rough. 30 years later he still does that. Does he consider himself CURED??? Absolutely NOT. He still sees the value of support, he gets his support and then he gives it as well. Those two factors combined keeps him on the straight and narrow.

Walking away when things get rough is a recipe for disaster. Stay in touch with your support team. Surround yourself with people that support your goals and make you feel good about your accomplishments, and what better support team then people that have been there done that just like you?

Keep in touch. This is how you will maintain.

So tell me, do you feel a support team is instrumental in your success with weight control?

The Power of Music

The Power of Music

Most of you know I am married to a musician, so music plays a significant role in our personal lives.  I have always been tuned in to the fact that music has the power to bring us up or down, whether we know it or not.  In fact, music has tremendous power in that it can sway our emotions very easily.  It can capture our attention and stimulate the brain, and is also powerful as a memory aid.  HA!  Who hasn’t had an advertising jingle get stuck in their head?

So why am I talking about music when this is supposed to be about Weight Control?  Remember that I mentioned yesterday that your focus is now on YOU and getting to your goals, and that the weight control business is mine.  So talking about music is something that can actually get you closer to your goals.

So many songs deal with sadness, failure, lost love or other problems dragging us down without us consciously knowing why.  Because music stirs old memories and emotions in us, it’s easy to relive old failures and setbacks through songs.  These are songs we must avoid at all costs, especially when we are focusing in on being a success with Weight Control.

We need to look for songs with lyrics that emphasize how you can take control of life.  Choose songs with inspiring “you can do it” lyrics while you are getting ready for your day.  Listen to music with positive affirmations and visualize yourself working towards and attaining your goals.  When your feeling down, put on one of your favorite uplifting songs and see if that turns your mood around.

Your job for today?  Give me one of your favorite uplifting songs.  I call them cleaning my house music, stuff I like to put on when I am trying to do chores around the house to make the time go by faster.  One of mine?  This song brings me happy goosebumps every time I hear it – lots of good memories surrounding this song:

I Can See Clearly Now – by Johnny Nash

Weight Control – Desire or Willpower?

Weight Control

In my not so humble opinion, weight control is all about desire rather than willpower.  How many times have you all heard me say that protocol is 95% mind and 5% diet?  This includes all the phases, P2, P3 and P4.

My goal as a coach isn’t to help people DROP the weight (please see this article about my attempt at not using the words LOSE or LOST in weight control) – my goal as a coach is to change peoples perspective and focus.  So many people have their priorities mixed up, they try to get to goal first and then implement the changes needed to make them long lasting, but no no my friend, my goal is to help them focus on making the changes NOW and then weight control becomes a non issue.  The weight will melt or stabilize on its own.

If I succeed in changing the focus from being on a “diet” or being afraid to live life because of weight fluctuations to a focus of getting healthier and happier and stable (heaven forbid I say NORMAL), then I have been a success at my job.

So I ask you, how intense is YOUR desire to succeed in weight control?  What are you doing to reach your goal?

The people that I am coaching have taken a HUGE step by using a Nutritional Coach to lead the way.  My promise to them is that by hiring me, the hard part is now MY shoulders, all they have to do is listen and implement.  If anything happens, it is no longer their problem but mine.  Talk about relieving a bit of stress eh?

Having a clear focus on the reasons you want to get to a specific number on the scale will help you maintain that desire no matter what.  So here is a question for my readers:

What are your reasons for wanting to get slimmer or more healthy through weight control? Give me just three things you are wanting to accomplish by being at your goal.
